So you had a bad day and wanted to run away
The pressure that was built you told yourself to forget
And with no support, you told yourself to suck it up
Now the past is coming back to haunt you and there’s no escape
You fake a smile so they won’t see
But the pain in your eyes tells a different story
Now as a friend I’ll tell you that we’re born to believe and doubt
And become confused of all the becomings
There’s time we have to lose and face rejection
What we want in life, we have no choice but to earn it
Sometimes we have to take the harder way to reach our destination of happiness
The reality of life is not a pretty one but it’s better than to have made an effort at everything than to have not done anything
The future is a scary place to have your mind dwell on
So prepare yourself and expect the unexpected
Wipe away those tears and lift your head up high
Like the sun rise and sun set, there’s many ups and downs in reality
Maybe you’ve lost the battle today but tomorrow, it’ll be something of the past

Mistakes We Made

Remember those days of pure innocence?
When the streets were clean, our mind healthy?
Remember when we could walk down an unbroken sidewalk without the blood spilled glass, that’s now scattered across our city?
The bright dream Detroit once had, is now shattered because of the increasing high rates of crimes and violence our people choose to ignore.
Abandon houses, which use to be a home of memories, are left to be vacant, only to be touch by thugs who’s only purpose is to use that space as a place to sell drugs, as a place to rape young girls.
Uncut fields is the perfect place to dispose large amounts of waste or even a dead body that can go on decaying for days but not notice.
But instead of trying to speak out against what’s contaminating our Detroit area, we play with time and wait for somebody else to get the job done for us.
All we ever do now is complain and complain but nothing is really done, is it?
We say the upperclass isn’t helping us, but why can’t we step up and help ourselves?
We have arms, feet, and a mouth, don’t we? Let’s put it to use.
Why should they help us when we can’t even help ourselves?
If the people don’t do anything, the government won’t care, and in the end, we’ll be back to square one.
Youth these days are so use to be seeing trash everywhere.
They say they’re accustom to be living in a dirty neighborhood.
But I can’t, I don’t want my kids growing up in a place where everything they touch is unsafe.
And that’s a reason why so many people are moving out of Detroit, which use to be known as the Motown City but now known as the 'Murder City.' This causes more abandon houses to be left on our streets.
It’s sad to know that the youth will never see what the good Detroit use to be.
People have become so narrow minded.
When we have a dirty neighborhood, people from outside think we have dirty people living in it because we do nothing but choose to live with the trash surrounding us.
Now does it really cost a fortune to clean up an area?
Does it really cost much to cut the grass?
To pick up trash and actually place it inside a trash can?
To not litter, to clean up after ourselves and to not vandelize property?
We pay taxes and those money are suppose to pay the city to clean up our neighborhood but instead most are being used to clean our city’s attraction.
Why do we think the Detroit's attractions are our city’s only hope left?
It’s not the attractions that makes Detroit, Detroit.
It’s the neighborhood and it’s people that makes Detroit what it is.
Therefore, stop making the excuses and be apart of this movement to help repair Detroit to it’s former glory.
When you see trash, please pick it up. You’ll be doing something good for your community.
A dirty neighborhood sets up a negative atmosphere.
But a clean neighborhood sets a healthy mind set.

The Strongest Have Their Moments of Fatigue

Some live to seek for a reason to why they’re living, while some struggle to to be the best they can be. Some may do only enough to get by, again some can care less. But for those unfortunate, puts up a bullet in their head. All those memories they kept, the moments that swept them off their feets, and the tears that brought them down to their knees…bursted into flames, turned into ashes, and blowned away by the wind. Regardless of what path we chose to walk, struggles are always there waiting for that one moment when we rise. Our hard work of lifting away those burdnes right off our shoulders only brought invitations to more. Sometimes you wonder if there is a purpose for you to do good when all that comes back are the bad. You feel as if there’s no use for you to struggle so hard because in the end, you know you won’t get what you want. You know for a fact that there is no worser feeling than failing yourself. Fighting so hard to then realize that in the end, you’ve just shattered your own dreams.
Then, you have people around you who try to cheer you up by telling you that you’ve tried your best, and that good things come to those who wait. Do they not understand what wait can do to someone? It can bring doubt. Talk is cheap. Cheap indeed. Yet, people believe it. Believing is seeing and as human beings that’s the least we can do. In the outside, I tend to live life as if I carry around an easy button. Once a problem comes up, solution is one push away. Refusing to face my inner emotions, I know well that things are the total opposite. I hate seeing the look of disappointment, struggles, guilts…it kills me to witness these emotions put on the faces of those who I care for the most.
Yes, I admit it. I admit that I may lie to myself everyday, I may not appreciate things I do, I dislike the fact that I can be selfish, I’m not always so sure about the decisions I make, I may not be perfect in size, shape or looks, I tend to wear a mask everywhere I go, and the list goes on and on…but that does not mean I find a way to get out of it. Inside, I do not chose to walk the ‘Easy Path.’ These struggles that I go through eveyday of my life may bring me down, but I have no reason to give up. I will always find a way to stack it right under me and use it as stairs to help me reach higher goals. Life is like hell…there’s no other place in this world where you can claim freedom. You will always be stuck with something that’ll glue your head to the ground. You will always have others who are more than happy to step upon your dreams. But the struggles…the struggles…it’s what matters the most.
So for fathers who struggle to put food on the table, for the mothers who struggle to raise their children, for the young who struggle to define their paths, and for elders who struggle to teach the young…know that your struggles are highly appreciated. You act as a shield to protect your love ones from the struggles you’ve faced. You believe in their capabilities to do better because you believe that YOU CAN TOO OVERCOME.
And that talk may be cheap, but it’s the source that’ll help us get through in life. I want us to all not forget the fact that oak trees grow under strong winds, and that diamonds are made under pressure. We will suceed…I will succed.

Beyond you’re pretty face, you’re lacking the charm
Don’t try to fill my head with words that’s has no support behind it
Talk is cheap
Wanna flow with me, you can do that
Wanna play with me, you can’t do that
If you can’t take the heat then in 1,2,3 seconds you’re gone
Hey pretty boy, I’m not like the other girls who’s heart you’ve easily toy with
You’re too persistent and trying to fool me with these words of sincere lies, it’s shameful to see you waste your time.
Hey pretty boy, have I burst your ego? Because this time around, it’s you who’s the loser in this game called love because you’re not a saint and I’m not going to bow down.

How To Be A Successful High School Student
Cierra Gibson
11th Grade
Martin Luther King High School Student
Whenever I try to think of good ways to be a good and successful high school student, I ask someone else who has graduated from high school and question as to what they may have done differently.
One way to be a good high school student is by choosing friends who want to be successful, and would encourage success. One way you can find out if your friends want to be successful is by asking them what they want to be in life, and if it appears that they don’t have any goals, you can talk to them about their future, and if not, you should find friends who want to go the same way you want to go. I know people, who were hard workers, but they picked the wrong friends and they were pressured into doing things that they didn’t want to do. If they were really my friends they would understand that I don’t want to do the things that they do. A lot of people become successful because they have friends backing them up. I met a man at Youthville and he was showing us what happens to people that hung around the bad crowd and he told us to show him our friends and he could tell us our future. I thought to myself and agreed that what he was saying was true. So look at your friends and see if they are going to help you make it out of high school and into college.
There are other ways to managing your time. It is hard to find time to study and complete your homework. There are also other things that occupy your time, sports, extra curricular activities, work, etc. The key is to set a portion aside for school and homework and extra curricular activities. If you are on a sports team or are in after school programs, try to squeeze a little time to study and do homework right before these activities. Every little bit helps. Take 15 or 20 minutes before you eat dinner or try reading something over again before you go to bed. The key is to put some time aside for your studies. If there is any downtime at your job, take out the books and try to get in a little work. Take good notes in class. Once you are home, try re-reading them or re-writing them to get the thoughts engraved into your brain. This is a full proof method to quicker learning. Highlight anything that looks important or you should know. This way it sticks out when you read it again. For exams and test, study in a quiet place and study as much as you can. Make flash cards, study guides, whatever it takes. Make sure you spend a lot of time to study. Don't forget to read over your notes a couple times as well. DO YOUR HOMEWORK. It isn’t made to be a pain in the you know what for any student. Homework is supposed to help you better understand the material you are learning. That is why you should do it. If you do your homework you will understand your subject a lot better.

Bullying
Cierra Gibson
11th Grade
Martin Luther King High School
Do you know why people are bullies? The reason why people are bullies is because they may be jealous of another person. They could be worried about something that is going on at home or that is happening to them. They hang around with other people to they try and fit in, they might like the sense of power that bullying gives you. They don’t have good self-esteem or they don’t like really like there self so they try to make you feel like you don’t like your self to. They might not have many friends or they are being abused or mistreated by adults and siblings in their lives.
I bet you say why am I being bullied? One reason is you could have just been in the wrong place at the wrong time. At school you could just be a teacher’s pet and your bully doesn’t like that. You could have more friends than them or that person could have been bullied before. The person that they bullied before could have moved and they are trying to find some one else they can bully now.
Name-calling and teasing are forms of verbal bullying. When someone kicks or punches us it hurts us on the outside, while when someone teases us or calls us names, it hurts us on the inside. In many classrooms teasing and name-calling are the most common forms of bullying. Unfortunately, because they don’t leave scratches or bruises and often happen when there are no adults around, they can go unnoticed by parents or teachers.
Exclusion or leaving someone out is another form of bullying. This is when a person or group of people won’t let someone play with them, join a group activity or will invite everyone to come to a party or take part in a game except for one person on purpose. All children (and adults!) like to fit in, have friends and feel accepted. When we exclude someone we make them feel unlikable and very alone. As you go through school, it’s understandable that you won’t be great friends with everybody in your class and there are some kids you just won’t have things in common with or will have trouble getting along with. However, this is no excuse, for purposefully excluding someone.
Kicking, punching, pinching, pushing are all forms of physical bullying. It is never okay to hurt someone physically even if they have hurt you. While it can be very tempting to hit someone if they have hurt you in some way, this is not going to make you feel better or solve the problem.
Threatening is another form of verbal bullying. When someone threatens someone else, they say we are going to do something hurtful, even though they may never do it. Being threatened is very scary and hurtful. The victims are always afraid the person is going to carry out their threats, but they often don’t know when or where this may happen. They start each day worrying they are going to come to school and find everyone talking about them or they are going to get beat up.
Cyber-bullying is bullying that takes place on the internet or with cell phones. It can take the form of many of the above forms of bullying: name-calling or teasing, exclusion or threatening. The only difference is instead of happening face-to-face, it takes place on-line via websites, chat-rooms or text-messaging.
If you are being bullied, tell an adult. Parents, teachers, any authority figure should be able to help you with your problem. Don’t just let this happen to you. Don’t be a victim of bullying.

Peer Pressure

I feel that we need to have a little discussion about this issue called “peer pressure.” Peer pressure is one thing we all face in our everyday lives whether its good or bad. So let’s talk more about bad peer pressure. Young ladies, no matter how people try to sugar coat it to make it seem good, it doesn’t mean you have to do it. If you feel like it is something you shouldn’t be doing then why risk doing it? Just because you see everyone else doing it doesn’t mean it’s alright for you to do it. Be that young lady who stands out because she’s always doing right. In the long run it will all work out just how you want it to. So, young ladies be you and only you. Just watch and see how it works out for you.

Young ladies it’s about time that we take a stand. Too many people feel that as young ladies we don’t know what we really want out of life. Well, let me be the first to let you know that as a young woman I know everything I want to accomplish in my life and how I am going to go about accomplishing them. So just because someone tries to control your life doesn’t mean you let them. No one can tell you how you can live your life but you and you are the only person besides the man upstairs who controls yours future. If you believe in your self then you should keep pushing towards your drams no matter what may come your way. And if you see a young lady who feels she can’t make it then be the young lady who’s there to help her when she needs it. If we don’t help one another then who will?

What Is A Lady?
Micah Maria Thornhill
Sophomore
Detroit School of Arts
**This is a poem I wrote for Youth Initiatives Project’s portion in an event for the Neighborhood Service Organization on the 25th at the Harper-Gratiot Multi Service Center (Y.I.P.’s main site). Just thought I would share it with all the readers of our Provocative Woman Campaign Blogs.
What is a lady? Someone who sets a positive example for everyone around her. One who inspires and gives, who cares and shares, who loves and forgives. One who does not hold grudges, for she sees the positivity in every situation. A lady is so much more than high heels, neat hair, and a nice fragrance. A lady should be beautiful inside and out, not just a species of the female gender. A lady is the equivalent of a lord; she is so much more than physical beauty. So take a tour of your mind and I’ll bet you’ll find the lady in you. That part of you that is so powerful. And what you need to do is take control of that part, let it shine bright, like a blinding light, for the lady in you is not that hard to find, because the beauty in us starts with the mind.

I Just Wanna Be Successful-(Preview)
Micah Maria Thornhill
Sophomore
Detroit School of the Arts
What is success to you? Success is defined as: the favorable or prosperous termination of attempts or endeavors. To me, success is simply achieving your goals. I have so many goals that I want to achieve, and to do that, I believe that I have to have a positive mind. And to keep my mind positive, I have to steer clear of the negative.
But how can I become successful? It may take sacrifices, or a motivational pep talk every once in a while. How can I steer clear of the negative? I believe that that could also take sacrifices. Those sacrifices could be keeping my distance from some of the negative people in my life, no matter how hard that may be. It could even mean celibacy; this is something my best friend and I have been considering. However, we’ve taken this farther than just a thought, and if we do decide to go through with it, we would make it official with rings; purity rings, that is.
In all honestly with ourselves, we decided that we weren’t doing the best we could as far as our grades in school. To improve, we need to stay focused. If this would mean making a vow to ourselves, one another, God, and our families, not to have sex, we are willing to take it. Believe it or not, sex can get you side-tracked as far as staying focused on things, and to make a promise not to get involved with that just yet, is empowering ourselves to aim higher, and to stay focused on the things that really matter. I say that sex can get you side-tracked because I know that I am the type of person that is easily distracted. Despite all these reasons, though, I want to keep my main focus on the things that are going to bring me a productive future. Sex is not something that I take lightly, especially at this stage in my life, and it’s definitely not something I’m going to throw around and tease with for my own benefit.
It’s not a point of being scared, thinking I am or wanting to be better than anyone else, or trying to be different; it’s a point of being empowered to do my best, to steer clear of the negative, to and be successful.
